I am an Obstetrician-Gynecologist and subspecialist in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.  I am interested in understanding and minimizing the risk of cancer from stem cell transplantation. My project focuses on discovering the phenotypic effects of genetic instability in human pluripotent stem cells.

A Type I diabetic myself, my long term goal is to develop a stem cell-based therapy for diabetes. To this end, my project involves discovering novel regulators of pancreatic development and applying this knowledge to improving methods for cell conversion and cell differentiation to produce functional beta islet cells.

In my projects, I apply a variety of genomic/epigenomic methods to understand the relationships between human pluripotent stem cells and their derivatives. Our results help us understand the contribution of different reprogramming methods to the transcriptional and epigenetic signatures of stem cell lines, and to determine whether patient-specific stem cells can be used to accurately model their disease.

My primary interest is in developing an in vitro directed differentiation system for human pluripotent stem cells that produces functional human hepatocytes. To this end, my project is focused on optimizing known developmental signaling pathways and incorporating new discoveries from our transcriptome studies.

Bioinformatics
I have bioinformatics experience in analysis of next-generation sequencing and microarray-based transcriptome and methylome data. My work centers on building a network model of hepatic differentiation using single-cell RNAseq data from in vitro directed differentiation of human embryonic stem cells.

As the clinical research coordinator at the UCSD Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center, I recruit study subjects for a variety of projects, including a project to discover biomarkers to predict pregnancy complications, another project to develop new non-invasive prenatal tests to detect fetuses with Down Syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities, and another project to see whether using next-generation sequencing for prenatal diagnosis has effects on the outcome of the pregnancy or on the psychological well-being of the parents.

In my work, I have several sets of responsibilities. I work with faculty members doing clinical and translational research to design and build databases for clinical and experimental data collection in REDCap and Tiatros, which are HIPAA-compliant database environments.  I also manage direct transfer of clinical data from the electronic medical record to these databases.  Finally, I am responsible for developing the Enterprise Clarity Data Warehouse and operational and quality reporting needs for the Women and Infants divisions.

I am a clinical fellow in the division of MFM. My clinical interests are non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring in pregnancy, translational research, epidemiology and maternal fetal medicine, and international health. My major research projects are focused on validating impedance cardiography as a noninvasive method for measuring cardiac output in pregnancy, and determining the physical and psychological impacts of bedrest in women with pregnancy complications.

I am the Administrator and Lab Manager. Although my master's degree is in Political Science and I worked in the non-profit community for many years in New York, I went back to school to receive a certificate in Biotechnology from Mira Costa College after moving to San Diego. I completed a one year CIRM Bridges to Stem Cell Research internship in 2011 and then joined the Laurent Lab as it was getting off the ground. I am happy to do whatever it takes to keep the boat afloat!

II am a Neonatologist and Pediatrician with a research focus in the fields of genetics and genomics. In the Division of Biomedical Informatics at UCSD under the guidance of Dr. Louise Laurent and Dr. Lucila Ohno-Machado, I am continuing my training in the field of Bioinformatics and Developmental Biology in order to independently develop new algorithms and apply them to understanding the epigenetic changes during human development.
